Action Research is a system of self-reflecting on an issue that needs improvement and a plan of action. A person can cycle through these steps often in search of constant personal and professional improvement. By reflecting on an issue, determining what data is already around on this issue, developing an action to take and then sharing the results, life-long learning can take place. As a school administrator, engaging in action research can set the example for teachers and students. It can help everyone involved to take ownership of their own learning, as well as the direction they would like that learning to travel. At the very least, becoming disciplined to take part in regular action research can be calming and rejuvenating by allowing some concentrated time away from the daily grind of being the one in charge.
Action Research can be used in many situations. I am even thinking about using it to resolve some situations at my home with my teenagers. I think that by sharing this system with them, that we will all be able to work through typical teen situations in a much calmer way. I believe I will start with the laundry situation. Everyone wants clean clothes, but nobody wants to actually run the machines and then put it away. There are complaints of lost clothes, clothes that don't smell clean, and I have actually seen some wearing other peoples clothes. I am sure once we sit down, reflect upon the situation, research some strategies, take some action by trying different solutions, and then sharing our results, we will all come up with a system to get the laundry done that works better for all the people in the house. Who knows. Maybe my husband won't wear my Friday "spirit" shirt anymore.
